A Late-Night Standoff with an Unidentified Guest

Last night, I opened the door to go to the bathroom.
And there, right in the middle of the light, stood A.
I froze instantly.
“Well… who are you supposed to be…?”
A froze for a moment too.
I needed to use the bathroom,
A had no idea why it was there either,
but somehow, we had discovered each other.
For a few seconds,
an incredibly awkward silence filled the air.
But the more I thought about it,
the more I realized A was probably just as startled as I was.
From A’s perspective:
“Oh… I just came in because it was dark…”
🚶♂️
“Huh?”
🚶♂️
“It’s a human.”😳
Me: “Huh?”
😳
A: “Huh?”
😳
Me:
“What on earth is this guy?”
A:
“What on earth is this guy?”
It’s still funny when I think about it.
I was startled by A,
and A was startled by me.
To each other, we were unidentified beings.
I retreated into the bathroom for the time being.
And I thought to myself.
‘What am I supposed to do with this guy…?’
Strangely enough,
A didn’t attack me,
nor did it come any closer.
It simply stood there for a while,
slowly changed direction,
and disappeared into the dark utility room.
It almost felt as if it were saying:
“I was startled too…”
“`html
When I think about it, it’s quite strange.
As we go through life,
we often misunderstand people.
Sometimes we think someone is trying to hurt us,
when in reality, they may have been afraid too.
Sometimes we think someone dislikes us,
when perhaps they simply didn’t know how to approach us.
A was like that last night.
I thought A was dangerous,
and A may have thought I was some enormous monster.
In the end, we both ran away from each other.
No one won,
and no one lost.
We simply returned to our own worlds.
By this morning, A was nowhere to be seen.
I don’t know whether it left the house,
or whether it’s hiding somewhere.
But strangely enough,
thinking about A still makes me smile.
Last night, in front of my bathroom,
I found myself engaged in a philosophical standoff with an unidentified life form.
The world is more entertaining than we think.
And sometimes,
even the smallest incidents can make a day feel special.
A.
Wherever you are, stay healthy.
Just not in my house.
