The Meaning of ASMR and My Personal Experience

๐ 5 AM, I couldn’t sleep

Last night, I finally managed to fall asleep around 5 AM. My body was tired, but strangely, sleep wouldn’t come. Even with my eyes closed, I felt wide awake, my mind was cluttered, and my heart was beating sensitively. In the end, I lay there meditating for three hours. But surprisingly, the moment I listened to ASMR, things changed. My body became calm, and I felt a sense of expansion, as if my brain was widening. Suddenly, I felt a surge of energy, and now I’m writing this post.
In this post, I’ll share what ASMR means, why so many people seek it out, and my own personal experience with it.

๐ What ASMR means

The meaning of ASMR that many people are curious about is an acronym for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response.
Simply put, it’s a phenomenon where you feel a tingling sensation, like a shiver, running down your head, neck, and spine when you hear specific sounds. A direct translation from English would be ‘autonomous sensory pleasure response.’
If you look at YouTube or blog comments, you often see questions like, โWhat does ASMR mean?โ In fact, it’s a popular keyword, searched over 1,600 times a month in Korea alone.
The reasons people search for โASMR meaningโ are simple:
- They’ve heard of it for the first time but don’t know what it is.
- They heard it helps with sleep or concentration.
- They became interested because it frequently appeared in YouTube recommendations.
๐ก What happens in the brain when you listen to ASMR

ASMR is not just a sound. Various hormones and neurotransmitters react simultaneously in the brain.
- Serotonin โ Calms the mind and reduces anxiety
- Oxytocin โ Provides a sense of intimacy, as if someone is close by
- Dopamine โ Gives a small sense of reward, a pleasant thrill
What I actually felt was not mere ‘pleasure’ but the calmness of the brain. There was no sexual desire at all, but rather a quiet tremor similar to an orgasm. In that state, the urge to write surged within me.
๐ง ASMR Sites
There are various ASMR sites where you can enjoy ASMR these days.

- YouTube โ The most popular, with lots of free content. A wide range of options including mukbang ASMR, whispers, rain sounds, and study sounds.
- SoundCloud / Podcasts โ Overseas creators upload content, often using professional audio equipment.
- Reddit communities โ Adult content like ‘gonewildaudio’ exists, but it’s best to avoid it if you’re seeking healing.
โ ๏ธ There’s an important difference here. Healing ASMR helps with meditation and sleep, but 19+ ASMR is essentially adult content and doesn’t aid in self-control or personal growth. From my own past experience, 19+ ASMR is intensely stimulating for a moment but leaves you feeling empty afterward. In contrast, healing ASMR left me with peace and concentration.
๐๏ธ ASMR Microphones

There’s equipment that significantly enhances the immersive experience of ASMR: the binaural microphone.
- A sense of presence, as if sounds are coming from both ears simultaneously
- The vividness of breathing and mouth sounds, as if they’re right next to you
What I listened to was ASMR recorded with such a microphone. In that moment, my heart fluttered slightly, yet my whole body relaxed. The important thing was that it wasn’t about sexual impulse, but concentration and stability.
๐ ASMR Features by Country

There are differences in ASMR styles across countries.
- Korea โ Mukbang ASMR is particularly famous. It mainly focuses on whispers, emotional stories, and a healing atmosphere.
- Overseas โ There’s a lot of role-playing, situational skits, and storytelling ASMR. For example, there are many unique contents like โfeeling like a doctorโ or โbarber shop experience.โ
While the methods vary by country, what people ultimately desireโcomfort and immersionโremains the same.
๐ฌ Community Reactions (ASMR DC Inside)

ASMR is frequently mentioned in online communities. For example, in communities like DC Inside, some say it’s โmore effective than sleeping pills,โ while others simply consume it for laughs.
Of course, communities like DC Inside offer good information, but they also contain provocative posts and humor, so it’s best to take them lightly. What I wanted to convey is that this shows how mainstream ASMR has become.
๐โโ๏ธ My Experience: Meditation + ASMR

I’m the type of person whose brain calms down and energy fills up just from meditating. But when I added ASMR to it, the tranquility deepened many times over.
Especially when listening to whispers and breathing sounds, I felt a sense of security, as if someone was watching over me. But what was surprising was that it wasn’t sexual desire, but a concentration that felt like life force being drawn upward.
With that energy, I got out of bed in the afternoon and started writing a blog post. Usually, I would have been too tired to do anything, but ASMR actually lifted me up.
โจ Summary & Conclusion
The meaning of ASMR is not just โauditory stimulation heard in the ear.โ
It is the brain’s response to feeling safe and intimate, and sometimes it offers a quiet power similar to meditation.
Some people simply listen to it to sleep, but I experienced brain expansion and creative energy within it.
Believe it or not, I wanted to express my experience in writing.
This is my record.
Someday, it will be a memory of mineโฆ ๐
