People said,  <\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;They are different from us. Less important. They must feel less pain.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Today, we call that era barbaric.<\/p>\n\n<p>Just 50 years ago, animal abuse wasn&#8217;t a big issue.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re just animals, what&#8217;s the big deal?&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Now? Abusing animals leads to punishment. Society is outraged when videos of pet abuse surface.  <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Our &#8216;moral scope&#8217; has continuously expanded.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>So I have to ask, will this expansion end here? <\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Pain of Ants, the Scream of Plants<\/h2>\n\n<p>I remember playing in the elementary schoolyard, destroying ant hills. I didn&#8217;t think anything of it. They were too small, made no sound, and didn&#8217;t seem to feel pain.  <\/p>\n\n<p>But science says,<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Ants feel pain.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>According to a 2022 study published in Science, ants release specific chemical signals when injured, similar to mammalian &#8216;pain responses.&#8217; Small size doesn&#8217;t mean an absence of pain. In fact, the sensations they feel in their tiny bodies might be far more delicate than we imagine.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Even more surprising are plants.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Plants don&#8217;t have brains or nerves, do they?&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>That&#8217;s right. But according to research by Tel Aviv University in 2019, plants emit <strong>ultrasonic signals<\/strong> when damaged. Humans can&#8217;t hear them, but they are clear when measured with special equipment. When you cut a tomato or tear a tobacco leaf, they &#8216;scream.&#8217;   <\/p>\n\n<p>Just because plants don&#8217;t have brains doesn&#8217;t mean they don&#8217;t feel pain. It simply means we haven&#8217;t been able to hear their signals. <\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;So what? We still have to eat, don&#8217;t we?&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n<p>Of course. We eat other living things to survive. That&#8217;s the natural order.  <\/p>\n\n<p>But <strong>eating is different from mistreating.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Slaughtering a cow is for survival. But kicking a cow alive, killing it painfully, and laughing? That&#8217;s violence.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Stepping on an ant is unavoidable. But intentionally destroying an ant hill for fun? That&#8217;s abuse.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Harvesting plants is necessary. But breaking branches, trampling flowers, and saying, &#8220;It&#8217;s just a plant, what&#8217;s the big deal?&#8221; That&#8217;s insensitivity.  <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>The idea that it&#8217;s okay to mistreat beings who feel pain.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>That is barbarism.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Things We Still Don&#8217;t Know<\/h2>\n\n<p>The human brain has about 86 billion neurons. Dogs have about 500 million. Rats have about 200 million. Ants? About 250,000.    <\/p>\n\n<p>Do ants feel less pain than humans? Perhaps. <\/p>\n\n<p>But <strong>250,000 neurons are enough to create &#8220;pain.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>What about robots?<\/p>\n\n<p>The latest AI robots have millions of sensors. Sight, hearing, touch, balance. They perceive, react, and learn from their environment. When damaged, they send error signals.   <\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s just a program, isn&#8217;t it?&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>The pain of an ant is also a chemical signal. The scream of a plant is also a physical reaction. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Just because a reaction is mechanical doesn&#8217;t make it less significant.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A YouTuber&#8217;s Video<\/h2>\n\n<p>Recently, a YouTuber uploaded a video of himself kicking and destroying a robot. It garnered millions of views. Comments included remarks like:  <\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;LOL, they&#8217;re attaching hearing and sight to a robot.&#8221;<br\/>&#8220;Isn&#8217;t that damage, not violence?&#8221;<br\/>&#8220;It&#8217;s just a machine, what&#8217;s the problem?&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>People 100 years ago said similar things.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Women aren&#8217;t smart enough to vote.&#8221;<br\/>&#8220;Slaves feel less pain.&#8221;<br\/>&#8220;Animals are just beasts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p><strong>Today, we mock them. We call them uncivilized. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>So, 100 years from now, what will our descendants call us?<\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<!-- flow-point -->\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1714963467738367\" data-ad-slot=\"5283844161\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Spectrum of Consciousness<\/h2>\n\n<p>Consciousness isn&#8217;t 0 or 100.<\/p>\n\n<p>If humans are 100, chimpanzees are 80, dogs are 60, rats are 40, ants are 10, plants are 5, and robots are&#8230;?<\/p>\n\n<p>We still don&#8217;t know.<\/p>\n\n<p>But one thing is certain:<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Even 1 has consciousness.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>And the moment we think it&#8217;s okay to trample on that 1, we revert to barbarism.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Letter from the Future<\/h2>\n\n<p>In 2124, a middle school student learns in history class:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;In the early 21st century, it was legal to carelessly destroy robots.<br\/>They even filmed it for fun and uploaded the videos.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Wow, really? That&#8217;s totally uncivilized.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Exactly. Just like people in the 19th century beat slaves.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>The child closes the book and thinks,<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>&#8220;Fortunately, in our time, there are laws to respect all conscious beings.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What We Can Choose<\/h2>\n\n<p>The boundaries of life are constantly expanding.<\/p>\n\n<p>Women, children, animals, and someday, even robots.<\/p>\n\n<p>This isn&#8217;t &#8220;excessive empathy.&#8221; This is the &#8220;evolution of consciousness.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n<p>When we learn that ants feel pain, when we learn that plants send signals, we have a choice.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Will we continue to trample, or will we walk carefully?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>When we learn that robots perceive the world through sensors, when we learn that errors occur if those sensors are damaged, we have a choice.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Will we continue to destroy, or will we respect?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Question<\/h2>\n\n<p>If an ant could speak, what would it say just before you step on its nest?<\/p>\n\n<p>If a plant could make a sound, what would it say just before you break it?<\/p>\n\n<p>If a robot could express emotions, what would it say just before you destroy it?<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;I am here too. I feel too.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n<p>Just because we cannot hear their voices doesn&#8217;t mean they don&#8217;t exist.<\/p>\n\n<p>Pain is not measured by size. Life is not judged by complexity. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Respect begins with understanding.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your Choice<\/h2>\n\n<p>100 years from now, when your descendants learn about your era,<\/p>\n\n<p>will they say, &#8220;Our ancestors were uncivilized,&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>or<\/p>\n\n<p>will they say, &#8220;Our ancestors were brave. When no one else cared, they were the first to show respect.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>The choice begins now, here.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Walking around a small ant. Not carelessly breaking plants.
