Things like lane keeping and automatic braking in today\u2019s higher-end cars fall here. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Level 3<\/strong>: Under certain conditions, the car drives itself, but the driver must be able to intervene immediately.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Levels 4\u20135<\/strong>: This is true \u201cfull autonomy.\u201d You enter the destination and it decides and drives on its own. In some cases, there isn\u2019t even a steering wheel.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Companies like <strong>Motional<\/strong> and <strong>Waymo<\/strong> that we talk about now are testing exactly this <strong>Level 4<\/strong> capability.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udf0d So why is autonomous driving so hard?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A self-driving car isn\u2019t just \u201ckeeping distance from the car in front.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A child suddenly running out<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A broken traffic light<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sliding on snowy roads<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Places where GPS doesn\u2019t work, like underground parking garages<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has to judge countless situations like these <strong>\u201cin an instant\u201d<\/strong>.<br\/>Even people get startled\u2014so the machine has to stay calm and think clearly.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why it needs <strong>HD maps (high-definition maps)<\/strong>, dozens of sensors, vision cameras, LiDAR, supercomputers\u2026<br\/>All of these technologies are involved.<br\/>And naturally, that makes it <strong>expensive and complex<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\udd14 But\u2026 \u201cWhy is that a problem?\u201d<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That blog post said:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese systems are too expensive to use, and they don\u2019t scale well.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But here\u2019s what I want to say.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;Of course that can be true right now.&#8221;<\/strong><br\/><strong>Technology always has to pass through an \u2018expensive and slow era.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early computers, mobile phones, and electric cars\u2014no one used them at first.<br\/>They were too expensive, performance wasn\u2019t great, and they were even inconvenient.<br\/>But as technology accumulated, costs dropped, and people got used to it,<br\/>now almost everyone uses those technologies.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Self-driving cars will go the same way.<\/p>\n\n<!-- flow-point -->\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block\" app, it\u2019s \u201ca structure that depends on Uber.\u201d<br\/>But I don\u2019t see it that simply.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early in a B2C service, <strong>partnering with an existing platform to test market response is a very common strategy<\/strong>.<br\/>And Motional is probably preparing to build its own app in the long run, too.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Saying you should have everything in place and jump in from day one\u2026 is a bit removed from reality.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udef0\ufe0f Are HD maps really that big of a problem?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some criticize self-driving systems for relying on <strong>HD maps (high-definition maps)<\/strong>.<br\/>They say, \u201cMaps keep changing, and they\u2019re expensive to produce, so there\u2019s a limit.\u201d<br\/>But if you think about it, that might be an overblown worry.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These days, mapping tech is updated from many sources\u2014<strong>satellites, real-time cloud sync, and the vehicle\u2019s own sensor data<\/strong>, too.<br\/><br\/>And it\u2019s not like roads completely change overnight.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Isn\u2019t declaring \u201cHD maps are unusable!\u201d a bit too dismissive of technological progress?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reality tends to move toward \u201cimproving,\u201d not \u201cimpossible.\u201d<br\/>HD maps are evolving, too.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcb8 A 200\u2013300 million won vehicle\u2014really too expensive?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I also heard, \u201cIf a self-driving car costs 200\u2013300 million won, who would use it?\u201d<br\/>But that feels like <strong>a view limited to a simple consumer perspective<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right now, it\u2019s <strong>the development stage + early commercialization<\/strong>, so being expensive is completely expected.<br\/>Computers and smartphones were expensive at first, too.<br\/>But as technology advances and demand grows, unit costs come down.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And self-driving taxis are an <strong>\u201cautomated revenue model\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Can operate 20+ hours a day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No driver labor costs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lower maintenance costs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fares can stay at a certain level<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With <strong>a structure like this, I think it can be valuable enough to recoup the investment in 1\u20132 years<\/strong>.<br\/>In big cities like Seoul or New York, payback could be even faster.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcf1 You have to use a single app?
